IPL - Lumenis OptiLight Devices

Can improve symptoms after just 1 session with significant changes after 2-3 sessions

Here at Dry Eye Solution, we use state-of-the-art Lumenis IPL devices, operated by our eye care expert on-site, which has the ability to treat Dry Eye conditions and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) was originally designed for dermatological issues.

IPL has been used to treat the likes of rosacea and acne with highly effective and safe results. However, the method for ocular conditions differs with Lumenis OptiLight

How it works:

Short, powerful bursts of light at specific wavelengths (between 515 and 695nm) cause changes in red blood vessels near the surface of the skin and eyes, increases skin temperature and eliminates problematic flora on the skin and eyes. We use the protocols developed by Dr Rolando Toyos (USA) which utilises a 590nm filter.

No referral is required. One of our optometrists will perform a comprehensive Dry Eye Assessment and discuss any questions you may have regarding your treatment. We create a suitable treatment plan that covers pre, during and post-treatment care.

  • Chronic Dry Eye causes red itchy eyelids when the eye glands are unable to normally lubricate the eye and which can cause you much discomfort. Early intervention is recommended to avoid further damage caused by Dry Eye Disease. ocular rosacea, blepharitis and demodex can be major risk factors in Dry Eye Disease.

IPL Dry Eye patients need a minimum of four treatments, performed two weeks apart, and 3, 6 or 12 monthly follow-up treatments are for maintenance and prevention.

    Noticeable improvements include:

    • Eyelids will look clearer

    • Improved tear film and tear break up time

    • Less erythema (abnormal redness or inflamed skin)

    • Fewer blood vessels

    • Thinner secretions

    • Improved vision

    • Greater comfort and less irritation

    • Overall reduced symptoms

It has been described medically that the immediate effect of the treatment is “that it acts like the world's best warm compress”.

One of our optometrists will create a tailored treatment plan specific to your symptoms and needs.

  • Rosacea is a skin condition causing redness of the face and bumpy skin lesions. It can also be a major contributor to Dry Eye Disease. More than 80% of people with Rosacea will develop Dry Eye Disease. If you suffer from Rosacea you can also experience inflamed and itchy eyelids, Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, and moderate to severe dry eyelids.

The IPL machine has been used since 1995 as an effective treatment for rosacea, reducing symptoms after just one session. However, IPL therapy for ocular rosacea typically requires at least four sessions that are performed two weeks apart, and maintenance treatments thereafter.

If you have red eyelids and broken blood vessels you will benefit from this therapy. In the long term, ocular symptoms are kept at bay due to decreased blood supply and inflammation.

Our optometrists create a tailored treatment plan according to your symptoms and needs.

  • Inflammation of the eyelids can occur with Dry Eye Disease, also known as blepharitis.

Blepharitis is an infection of the eyelid. It can result in crusted eye-lashes or lid margins and will feel unpleasant and itchy. Symptoms are often worst on waking. Blepharitis is caused by bacteria that normally lives harmlessly on the skin.

It is recommended treating Blepharitis quickly. Left untreated it can accelerate inflammation which can cause the lids to become irritated, red and swollen. The non-production of tears can cause Dry Eye Disease.
